How to Fix a Computer That Won't Turn On

Pressing the power button and seeing a blank screen is a stressful experience. Before assuming the worst, follow these 5 steps to isolate the hardware fault and potentially bring your machine back to life.

Step 1

Verify the Power Source

Bypass any power strips or surge protectors and plug the computer directly into a known working wall outlet. Sometimes, a tripped surge protector is the only thing standing between you and a booting computer.

Step 2

Check the Power Supply Switch

Look at the back of your desktop tower where the power cable connects. Ensure the master switch on the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is flipped to the 'I' (On) position, not the 'O' (Off) position.

Step 3

Perform a Hard Power Drain

Unplug the power cable completely. Press and hold the power button on the front of the computer for 30-60 seconds. This drains residual flea power from the motherboard capacitors. Plug it back in and try turning it on.

Step 4

Listen for Beep Codes or Look for LEDs

Press the power button and pay close attention. Does the motherboard emit a series of beeps? Do any diagnostic LED lights flash? Consult your motherboard's manual to decode these specific hardware error signals.

Step 5

Reseat the RAM

If fans spin but the screen is black, your RAM might be loose. Open the case, press the clips on the side of the RAM slots, remove the sticks, and firmly press them back in until the clips snap shut. Attempt to boot again.
